Tassel Earrings | DIY
Say Tassel five times fast and it really starts to sound like the name of a character from Fiddler on the Roof.
Here’s the thing— I’m not an earrings person. I’ve had my ears pierced since forever, and could show you on both hands how many times I’ve worn earrings in the past fifteen years. I can’t wear most earrings because I’m allergic to the metal, and I’m not always pumped about the price of the earring I can wear.
But I’ve always loved the idea of earrings (I think they make me look a bit more grown up, does anyone else feel this way when they wear earrings?). The first pair of earrings I owned were a pair of kitty cats. Because I was a cool kid.
My friend Katie has been making her own earrings for awhile now and has totally inspired me to step into the DIY earring world. The idea of wearing my own designs and designing the kind of earrings that match my clothing and personality just sounds so much fun!
So I’ve started with tassels and would love to move onto clay next.
What you will need:
No jewelry making tools are required! You will need two fish hook earrings and two gaggles of string (Maybe they’re called bundles of string?). I only paid $5 for these items at Michaels! That’s less than I would pay for a pair of these ready made earrings at Target!
CUTE AND AFFORDABLE. This is why you must do this DIY too.
Let’s do this
Step 1: Just do one earring at a time! Take your first gaggle of string, leave the packaging in place, and cut it exactly where the loops already are. Once you’ve cut both ends of your strings, take off the packaging stickers, and take 2-3 strings out and set those aside.
Step 2: Lay out all your strings evenly and use one of your extra strings to tie all the strings together right in the middle. Once the knot is tied, you will want to attach your earring base to the this string as well.
Step 3: Fold the gaggle of strings in half and tie a knot around the bent end (not the end with all the loose strings). Really make sure you tie this string tight, as it’s the glue that keeps it all together.
Step 4: Trim your tassels to your preferred length.
Step 5: ROCK THOSE EARRINGS. Hopefully it wasn’t a “tassel” to make them!
If you end up making these, I’d love to see how they turn out! Let me know if you have any questions in the comments!
